Cozumel Overview
Cozumel sits off the eastern tip of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula in the Caribbean Sea. An established resort area, Cozumel boasts the world’s second largest coral reef system, which makes it an extremely popular destination for divers. It also a haven for anglers and even golfers!

The Island of Cozumel measures 48 kilometers (30 miles) from north to south but only 16 kilometers (10 miles) from east to west. On either side of the island, beaches form many white sandy refuges. Gentle waves and transparent waters wash the western side of the island, while occasional waves crash against the eastern side.

The average daily air temperature on Cozumel is 80 degrees. In July and August, the highs range from the upper 80’s to the low 90’s. In December and January, the daytime temperatures average in the 70’s. During the winter months (September-December) Cozumel experiences cold fronts that may create windy, cloudy and cooler weather. Afternoon thunderstorms are common, usually lasting for an hour. Water temperatures range from 76 degrees-83 degrees throughout the year.

More than 80% of the island is uninhabited lush tropical vegetation and pristine coastline, making Cozumel a true escape from the hustle and bustle of life in the big city. Its only town, San Miguel, has an international airport that welcomes daily flights from around the world. And with a year-round tropical climate, every day is a day at the beach!

Beaches

The west side of the island generally has beaches with calmest water. Beaches with an iron shore (rocky) shoreline on the west coast are generally considered to be the best for snorkeling.
Surf and larger waves on the east side of the island are beautiful but may pose a potential hazard, since both currents and undertows are strong. Flags are displayed showing the safety level for swimmers.  Never swim alone. Despite the swimming conditions, these serene beaches are perfect for sunbathing and playing in the waves. This area is very popular with the locals and their families.

The Cozumel Chrysalis Group

The Cozumel Chrysalis Group is a non-profit organization that helps children to receive an education. There are many families in Cozumel who lack the financial ability to send their children to public school.
Chrysalis assists students who show a desire to better their lives through education. Mexican public school students are required to pay fees for registration and special exams in addition to providing their own uniforms, classroom supplies and some books. The financial scholastic support and materials provided by Chrysalis directly benefit the students allowing them to focus on learning and achieving their potential.
